Six figure bus........almost - $99,000 !

Gooding and Company Auctions had a particularly good day at Amelia Island this year, topping more than $28 million in sales at its March 8 event and setting five world record sale prices. A whopping 10 cars sold for more than a million dollars, two of them for more than $2 million.

“This year’s Amelia Island Auction brought fantastic results, with 97 percent sold and five world records, with a couple that surprised us,” said David Gooding, the company’s president and founder.

An interesting result was Lot 66, a 1965 Volkswagen Type 2 21-Window Bus. We’ve noticed a huge increase in interest in Type 2s in the last few years, and the sales result for this fully restored example indicates that the appeal is only growing. The bus blew through the pre-sale estimate of $60,000-$80,000, finally hammering at $99,000.

You guys laugh, in 10 years that will be the only Restored Aircooled VW you will be able to buy for less than $10,000 in the Northeast.

That Bus for $99,000 is just a sign of the times. There was a 21 window that went for $126,500 at Gooding's 2013 Pebble Beach Event, and there was a 23 Window at the Scottsdale Event that went for $140,250. It's simply a matter of a few years before they pass the $200,000 mark. Then any 21/23 Window in need of restoration won't be able to be had for less than $30,000. It's not just the Busses either. There was a 56 Ghia that went for $67,000 at the 2011 Pebble Beach Event, a 70 Ghia Vert that went for $25,300 at the 2012 Amelia Event, and there's a 57 Ghia estimated to go between $45,000-$55,000 for the 2014 Amelia Event. The shop I now work at has finished a 300SL Mercedes Roadster, and is currently working on two 300SL Gullwings. Within the last 5, or so years the Roadsters have increased in value over 200%. The Gulwings have went from $605,000 for Oprah's 54 at Gooding's 2008 Pebble Beach Event to a 56 going for close to 1.9 million at the most recent Scottsdale Event. Volkswagens have finally caught up to what the Ford/Chevy owners have been dealing with the last 15 years trying to but a 60's/70's vehicle, and what the Mopar guys have been dealing with the last 20. It's only going to get worse.

Having a surplus of expendable income must do strange things to people. I'd rather have the money. lol.
