The fist call for qualifying had the racers reassembling in the staging lanes. Along with Anton Walker tweaking a new car, a handful of others racers were tuning recent changes and making adjustments to their cars. Doug Colley has a new engine combo, David Rudd was taking a first pass on a new trans build, Chris Brown had his engine transplant, and Wayne Axford would be running through his gears for the first time with recent changes.

Rolling into the feature lane was our friends out of the South Bay, Eserini Racing with the World's Fastest Import H2O Dragster. In our exchange of pleasantries, Bill Eserini offered up $100.00 for a perfect light to the NASA Racers. Be it in qualifying or eliminations, $100.00 Cash if you can produce the time slip.
Seems like a pretty safe gamble but the racer's of NASA have scored a number of triple goose eggs. In fact, 2 have been scored in eliminations in one day!

The prize was set as an incentive and the racers were motivated. During the second round of qualifying, two cars needed to be towed off the track. David Rudd appeared to have transaxle problems. In the very next pass, the throttle cable came unglued on the new Walker racer.
After two rounds of qualifying, Chris Brown was scored in the top spot.

.010 Chris Brown
.020 David Rudd
.035 Todd Houston
.044 Doug Colley
.083 Ken Porter
.102 Anton Walker
.142 Wayne Axford
.144 Chad Axford
.299  Steve Poderzay

With a nine car field, advantage goes to Chris Brown with a bye in the first round and lane choice throughout the day.

Back in the pits, in what has become the norm, the NASA Racer's were making the rounds checking on casualties. The repair to Anton Walker's Racecar was simple. We all know about the little things that come up on a new car.
David Rudd's initial diagnosis was a broken trans. Always wanting to lend a hand, along comes Transaxle rebuilder Extraordinaire Ken Porter. A closer look and a second diagnosis identifies a broken inner CV joint.

Mr. Rudd has a spare and gets busy making a repair.

Rudd had a huge smile on his face when Porter reassured him wasn't a major loss like what was discovered in the previous trans failure.

During the pause before eliminations I made my way through the pits for individual driver's meeetings. Most of today's roster was made up of veteran racers who are all very familiar with the content of the meeting minutes. With many racers making repairs and/or adjustments it was hard to get everyone together in a group.
I spent more time with Anton Walker and the Late Night Air Cooled Crew to go a little more indepth with the usual drivers meeting notes.

I was very pleased to at least get the group together at the top of the staging lanes to announce BUGPACK was back on board as a NASA Grand Prize Sponsor. In this day and age of downsizing and cutbacks, this announcement was huge.

One Race Sponsor, Eserini Racing was the big crowd pleaser of the day.

As we pair up for eliminations, the track surprisingly remained 8 1/2 on a 10 scale. Very unusual for the racing surface to remain that good during an Import race.

Brown ran his bye with a 13.49 on a 13.55 dial-in.

Colley goes -.054 Red lifting the wheels out of the beams at launch. He scores best wheelie but the win goes to rookie points leader Steve Poderzay.

I guess it is true that "no good deed goes unpunished". After helping David Rudd get back into the race, Porter goes one-hun under running a 16.43 on a 16.44 dialin with the Pea Shooter.
Great run for Rudd scoring best package in round one (.050), good for $25.00 cash from McCoey Construction.

Great run for Anton Walker winning his first ever round of eliminations against the very accomplished Chad Axford. Anton logs 12.107 on a 11.90 dial with a reaction time of .056
Nice way to start with a new car.

Pit buddies parked in the feature pit lot at the top of the staging lanes ironically pair up in round one. After trading a starter for needed gaskets, it was Mellow Insanity Racing vs Late Night Air Coooled Racing.
Bummer for the Houstons breaking a trans at the hit. They score Hard Luck Award.

In round 2, Chris Brown puts together a nice package running 13.50 with a 5 on a 13.50 dialin. His reaction time was .050
Wayne was uncharacteristically late with a .158 r/t and then broke out running 11.64 on a 11.72 dial in.

A tire pressure change to correct tire spin felt in the first round has Poderzay going -.007 Red.
A gift to Anton Walker who runs 12.095 on his 11.90 dialin

Rudd gets the bye and logs another impressive run with 15.687 on a 15.68 dailin.

In the Semi's, Chris Brown gets out first with a .030 r/t to Rudd's .164
Brown scores the win and takes home the Bounty Hunter Award ($50.00 from Greg's VW) running 13.516 on a 13.45.
Rudd goes 15.816 on his 15.68

First time racer Anton Walker gets the bye into the final round.

Another NASA Cinderella Story has Anton Walker appearing in the final round versus defending champ Chris Brown.
Walker has not had an easy route going up against the likes of accomplished racers Chad Axford and Steve Poderzay. In every race, Walker had to chase down the slower cars. It can be very tough sitting at the starting line waiting for the tree to start as your opponent is getting smaller as he gets further down track.

Brown leaves first with a .091 r/t
Walker leaves too early and fouls out with a -.119 red light.
Regardless of the outcome, Anton's first NASA outing with a new car can only be viewed as a success. Today was a shake down that ended up with a trip to the Winner's Circle.

There was a lot of impressive driving this outing "good lights & close Di's". Hoping to recapture top spot next Sat since I got bumped off first time this season. Won't be easy. Speaking to Eserini's afterwords I ask him if he would make perfect light double zero instead of triple zero. It was considered.
