The road the Shasta Bus has been down has been fun and exciting. Along with my Crew of Jason, Tom Simon, and Jerry Matsko we have made our mark in the stock/vintage Bus Class. Our Shasta Snow Trips have all been memorable and well documented.
Hasn't always been a smooth road (pun intended!). We have had our (fuel) gremlins and have even had the Bus on it's side.....I take full responsibility for both examples.
Now that we have some successes under our belt(s), we've come to the conclusion it's time to take the next step. What might that step be you ask? Well (my best Tim Allen impression) "We want more Power! R-R-Rrrrrr!"

Tom and myself have picked the brains of some of the best in the business and believe we have dug up the best recipe for an engine(s) for our needs. High on the list of wants are torque, sustained RPM, and fuel mileage. Keeping along our limited shoe string budget, we will rummage through our shelves, sheds, and hope chests in search of usable parts. Some things we will just have to bite the budget bullet and buy new.
We will use all of our resources for help in areas that we can't work ourselves.

As it stands now, the plan is to get together for our first work day on Saturday March 6. Donor engine teardown, parts cleaning and identifying will be the bulk of our first gtg. We hope to establish a baseline of what we already have, what needs to be machined, and what we still need to obtain. Of coarse pics and video will document our build(s).

Next big event for the Shasta Bus will be the Beetle Ball 24, Vancouver to Ensenada in late July. This time we hope to run up front with the unlimited vehicles.

More tomorrow 8)

Glad you chimed in Jerry. Tom just left moments ago. Also was treated to a visit from good buddy Rich Duncan.
Had a great wrench/brain storming day. We tore down what we hoped would be a good donor engine Tom picked up in a multi-level deal. This get together was the first of what will be many build days.
Our plan is to build 2 motors from a guarded recipe courtesy of Steve Phillips.
I'll let Tom share the highlights of today's activities and I will add the visuals with the pictures I'm down loading now.

I saw that Greg and Tom where going to do something VW related today, at Gregs and invited myself to drop by. They are a very cool set of dudes to hang out with and listen to. So much motor jargon going back and forth. I even got my hands dirty, a little bit. Greg and Tom, thanks for letting me hangout and help, it was fun.

Hoped to get some pics from the very beginning, but I forgot to pull out the camera.
Unknown displacement engine from Tom was complete with lostsa cool chrome tin (you know what they say about chrome!), external oil filter, extractor with dual quiet packs, and oil breather box.
Hey!, it had a complete set of 40 IDF's, Original Dog House Fan Housing, and the generator looked brand new. This motor might have all the right stuff!

Hate to have to deal with the old hardened oil lines. They leak all over the place and you always seem to trip or get tangled up in them.
Tom got caught up in a submission hold.....he had to tap out.

Interesting oil pump. None of us have ever seen one in this configuration. Can anyone shed a little light on this design? Manufacturer?
Seems to me to be a decent design. The shaft that the gear rotates on is part of the pump cover and is supported at both ends unlike the designs I'm used to seeing with the gear floating on the shaft that is cast into the pump body.

Tom knew there was a possibility that water may have gotten into the engine during the several years the motor sat idle. as I pulled the drain plug I guessed a 5 second count of water draining out before we actually saw oil. Well the caount actually went to 13 before we saw what oil was in the motor. Once we loosened up the heads an ugly rust colored water started leaking out between the head and cylinder at number 3.

Now that we got the heads and cylinders off, we can identify the displacement....90.5
Number one piston is a bit scuffed.

After we found water in the engine, Rich took a closer look at the carbs....how else is the water going to get in?
