My Project: 1971 vw 1600 on a trike
Back fire on top end!

Hey ya'll sure could use your help. I have a 1971 VW engine 1600 the car is not there any more its on a trike. Anyway it started backfiring when I get it up to 60ish, we have changed all the plugs and wires, it has a new carb, the valves have been adjusted and new gaskets on the valve cover. We have emptied both gas tanks to make sure there is no water in the system, not only is it backfiring it gets so bad that it can't get over 45, if you push it hard enough it might catch up and go on, but if you let off the throttle enough it will cruise right along, it does not like to be full throttled.
